Course Content
Anthropology (ANT)
The child as developmental being: Here you are introduced to the different developmental phases and tasks of a child in the process of growing up, as well as the relevance of this developmental phase for the helper. These aspects link up with the following sections, namely:
Presuppositions: With this section we would like to make you aware of the important role of presuppositions and how they influence your outlook on life as well as your therapy.
True life: We also discuss what true life is, in other words what God’s goal for our lives is. We also discuss how God shows true love to us and how change can take place in adults and children.
The Psycho-Social Theological Anthropology (PSTA): This anthropology provides a holistic view on the road you must follow with your client. The anthropology also provides a structure for counselling. The anthropology is developed from a dynamic interaction between theology and the social sciences. With this anthropology the focus is on the new life in Christ, and not only on the sin of man.
Ecometrics in Counselling (ECC)
In order to really help clients, problems must be identified. The only reliable and valid way to assess a person’s problems quickly and scientifically, is through the use of standardized measurement instruments. Assessment also helps the therapist to structure and organize the helping process. This will enable you to deliver better quality service and to see results sooner.
In this module you are trained to use the following multidimensional assessment scales:
- Personal Multi-problem Screening Inventory (PMSI)
- Child Functioning Inventories (Primary and High School)
- Career Planning Inventory (CPI)
Integrated Counselling Model (ICM)
There has always been tension between people in the helping professions who are actively involved in counselling and theorists who do research on the human sciences. Therapists are confronted daily with the realities of life and therefore want to use anything that works. Theorists often focus so much on “irrelevant issues” with regard to the helping process, that many of these issues do not have any value for the therapists who are confronted with difficult problems on a daily basis.
With this module, we try to provide you with a practical, but scientifically sound helping model for children and adults. This helping model accommodates the following elements:
- problem solving
- life management
- education in the art of living
Counselling Praxis 6 (CPX6)
To get clients (children and adults) involved in their helping process, visual, easy and practical helping aids were developed that can be used during counselling. This module deals with the use, methodology and goals of the helping aids.
Counselling Detachment Patterns (CDP)
As children, our hiding patterns may have protected us in a threatening environment. But what served as protection for a child can become a prison to an adult, isolating us from the very things we need to heal and mature. This course helps you (and your client) explore the hiding patterns you’ve developed and guides you towards the healing grace and truth of safe, connected relationships with God and other people.
Trauma Counselling (TRC)
Trauma is a reality facing everybody. It is important for survivors of a traumatic incident to receive pastoral counselling as soon as possible to help them to regain balance in their lives. This short course deals with the intervention to traumatized survivors to help them to deal with the traumatic incident.
Counselling Co-dependency (CCO)
The concept of dependency and codependency is no longer limited to alcohol; it takes the rest of the substance-abuse spectrum and includes nearly any obsessive compulsion, including eating disorders, sex addiction and workaholism. These and other dependencies lock addicts and their codependents in an endless cycle of addiction, denial, resentment, and anger. There is no joy in doing everything for another and calling it love. Even if you believe you are making intelligent choices -the burden of codependency will cause untold misery in your life and in the lives of your family members. Is codependency at the root of your (or your client’s) unhappiness? Let this short course walks you through ten proven stages to recovery from codependency, introducing a new dimension: the important stage of seeing God’s unconditional love as the answer to your deepest emotional needs and your hunger for love.
Development Stages: A Biblical Perspective (DVS)
This short course defines the steps towards self-fulfilment and satisfying relationships with clear, insightful and easy-to-follow guidelines. This down-to-earth four-step programme of healing and growth shows you how to:
- Bond with others to form truly intimate relationships;
- Separate from others and develop a sense of self;
- Understand the good and bad in yourself and others;
- Grow emotionally and spiritually towards adulthood.
This course is filled with helpful, easy-to-adopt techniques that helps you (and your client) get most out of your life, heal the wounds of the past, and build lasting, loving relationships.
Counselling Burnout (CBT)
This course focuses on a pastoral therapeutic approach towards burnout. Some of the topics which are being dealt with, are: what is burnout and who gets it; warning signs of burnout; burnout and bitterness; the workaholic; burning out for God; Jesus treats twelve tired men; physical recovery; emotional recovery; spiritual recovery; the rekindling of hope; recovery from burnout.
How People Grow (HPG)
In this short course you will be given age-old keys to growth from the Scripture, with life applications that may be different from what you (or your client) always thought and were told. Whether life is going well for you (or your client) or whether you (or your client) is struggling in some area, the insights in this course are essential to progressing spiritually, relationally, and emotionally. In turn you will address gut-level issues with insight and hope. This course will do more than revolutionize your (or your client’s) understanding of Christianity -it could very well change you (or your client’s) lives!
As counsellor you will discover:
- what the essential processes are that make people grow;
- how those processes fit into a Biblical understanding of spiritual growth and theology;
- how spiritual growth and real-life issues are one and the same; and
- what the responsibilities are of counsellors who assist people in growing -and what your own responsibilities are in your personal growth!
Shining focussed light on the great doctrines and themes of Christianity, this course takes you to the heart and the power of faith. It shows why all personal growth is spiritual growth -and best of all, it helps you understand the Bible in a way that will help you head with confidence down the road of growth in Christ.
The Human Self: A Biblical Perspective (THS)
This short course begins in a very private place: your thoughts. The universal lies that trigger the cycle of self-doubt, robbing you of joyful living are unmasked. One by one these lies are dismantled and you are pointed to a higher truth that is the source of meaning, and the source of life itself. This course focuses on how our thoughts affect our emotional, relational and spiritual development. You will be taught how to guide your client to gain a better understanding on how to use his/her emotions to identify his/her beliefs so that he/she can reject Satan’s lies and replace them with God’s truths. As counsellor you will guide your client to seeing his/her true worth through God’s Eyes!
Conflict Management (CMA)
This course empowers you (and your clients) to take the initiative in creating relationships that are honest, intimate and fulfilling. It shows how to have a helpful and effective confrontation with another person. You’ll learn how to talk to your spouse, someone you’re dating, your kids, your coworker, your boss, your parents, and others. Full of practical tips and how-tos, this course will help you make your relationships better, deepen your intimacy with people you care for, and cultivate more love, understanding, and respect between you and others.
Relationship Management (RMT)
Is your life out of control?
Do people take advantage of you?
Do you have trouble saying no?
Are you disappointed with God because of unanswered prayers?
Often, Christians focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limits and limitations. When they are confronted with their lack of boundaries, they ask:
- Can I set limits and still be a loving person?
- What are legitimate boundaries?
- What if someone is upset or hurt by my boundaries?
- How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money?
- Aren’t boundaries selfish?
- Why do I feel guilty or afraid when I consider setting boundaries?
Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not. Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: physical boundaries, mental boundaries, emotional boundaries, spiritual boundaries.
All of us need to be able to have a healthy confrontational conversation at one time or another. Sometimes it’s a matter of simply saying no so we don’t get overextended, or saying yes to better ways of building intimacy in a good relationship. At other times we may need to confront a difficult person in a relationship -a controller, a manipulator, an irresponsible person, perhaps even someone who is abusive.
Our Pastoral Therapy Course enables you to:
- assess quickly and effectively;
- get clients involved, enthusiastic and motivated;
- counsel with a specific vision and to structure your counselling programme;
- use thoroughly tested counselling aids (therapy sheets) in a practical, simple and visual way;
- manage group therapy effectively (e.g. marriage counselling and self enrichment groups).
Course Particulars
After enrolment, all study guides and material will be made available to you on the Internet or on CD and you can start with your studies immediately. Mutual contact through the Internet will also be established. Students must hand in all assignments during the course. The first group of assignments must be passed to obtain admission for the practical examination (the last assignment).
No theoretical examinations are written. To pass the assignments, you need to obtain a minimum of 60%. Background
The pastoral therapy programmes are the result of three doctoral studies at UNISA and UJ as well as two M.A. degrees at UJ and the NWU (Potchefstroom Campus). The programme was developed from the dynamic interaction between theology, psychology and the social sciences, enabling you to follow an integrated approach in counselling.
Students are trained to help teens as well as adults. Although the programme is theoretically sound, Pastoral Therapy focuses on the actual practice of counselling, structures the helping process and enables helpers to counsel more effectively. You will also be guided to utilise ordinary toys as therapeutic aids.
Our Pastoral Therapy course is currently used with great success to:
- Teach traumatized persons (teens and adults) to maximize their potential and live fulfilling lives, in spite of circumstances or bad experiences, with special attention given to behaviour-and adaptation problems.
- Develop insight and understanding in clients’ functioning that will help the counsellor to motivate them and enrich their lives on a personal level.
- Teach people to manage their lives and problems effectively and responsibly, from a Christ centred self-perception and identity.
- Teach people to prioritize their problems, to live in the here and now, identify and utilize underutilized opportunities, and get the most out of difficult situations.
Pastoral Therapy
Pastoral Therapy is aimed at effecting understanding and insight into human behaviour. In the first place clients are guided to understand themselves better. Understanding alone provides the possibility of healing. Clients have to proceed to effective action if they are to expect healing. When Pastoral Therapy is fully utilized (understanding that finds expression in action), it can lead to a life that is blessed with rich and fulfilled relationships with God, self and neighbour:
Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to this word; instead, put it into practice. Whoever listens to the word but does not put it into practice is like a man who looks in a mirror and sees himself as he is. He takes a good look at himself and then goes away and at once forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks closely into the perfect law that sets people free, who keeps on paying attention to it and does not simply listen and then forget it, but puts it into practice -that person will be blessed by God in what he does. (James 1: 22-25)
